PIG BREEDERS' ASSOCIATION

The annual report of the abovenamed association will be presented to members during Palmerston Show week. It states that during the year —notwithstanding the war and the disastrous epidemic—fair progress has been made; twenty breeders having been added to the membership of the association. We regret that eight of the original members have resigned, in most cases owing to the war, which leaves a membership of seventy-four. The financial position is fairly satisfactory, considering the heavy expenditure; both the Herd Books (240 volumes) and the Pgrrett Shield are good assets, being -fSsured for £110. There seerrui to Wf some misapprehension with regard to the shield, and we take this opportunity of explaining the matter. In order to encourage the breeding of pure bred pigs it was decided that a shield be purchased and offered for competition for most points won by pigs registered or eligible for registration in the Herd Book, annually, at one of the leading shows. The allotment for each year to be fixed at the annual meeting, with the expectation that the shield be competed for in the various districts of the Dominion in succession. The first volume of the Herd Book has been in the hands of breeders for some time, and it is hoped will prove of assistance to them. There are some trifling errors, but considering there were no previous records to assist the Editing Committee, such might be expected. As the fire-brand method of marking registered pigs proved a failure, it was decided to adopt the "Tattoo." The apparatus was duly ordered, but only having come to hand in March, it was considered advisable to defer making arrangements for remarking pigs registered in Volume I. until those accepted for Volume 11. could be marked at the same tune.

The statement of accounts showed that the receipts totalled £158—members' subs. £80, registration fees £38, herd books £27. The expenditure was £194, of which printing the Herd Book cost £106, and the Perrett Memorial Shield £31, secretary's salary £25 and some smaller items accounting for the balance.
