RAILWAY CROSSINGS.

. : (To the Editor.) , Sir.—The recent dreadful accident at Bußtnythorpe revives, again the menace of the railway crossings in the vicinity, notably the one on the Main South road. Ifc appears to me: (without claiming; any engineering skifl) that i^ is possible to do away with this particular danger.. The Nolantown and Turuturu road crossings present more difficulties, being practically on dead level sites. If a deviation were made to the south of the South road crossing (through Mr Batnford's property) to iouch the point where there is a large railway filling, the r»ad could be carried under this if the filling were converted into a trestle bridge, and could be continued on to meet the present South road at Mr Lovell's pond, Such an alteration' would lengthen the r*>ad by a few j chains, but on the other hand the existing grade could be improved, for there would then be one hiJ. Ti Jess to negotiate. J Moreover, the level o£ the railway line ■ would not be reqr^jred to be altered at all. , ; i If such a }\oik were completed, the danger at t^is point would be entirely done away w ith road traffic passing safely u^der the rails. | I shotjld like to have an expert opinion o^a project.—lam, etc., ! D. V. ATION,
