(From Our Own Correspondent.)

TOWN BOARD

The monthly meeting was held on Tuesday, Commissioners Free, Han-is, Madgwick, and Archbold being present. I Comr. Preston wrote apologising for j non-attendance owing to ill-health, and was granted leave of absence. Comr. Free was voted to the chacr. Correspondence was dealt with as follows :—From Mi- D. Green (Inaha) stating that he was not the owner of a eixroomed house that had. been condemned by the Health Department. From Mrs T. H. White, asking permission to use the registration Badge from a cow whose license had been cancelled to another , owned by her—Granted. From the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce | re State conti-ol of main arterial roads i and asking for the Board's support to a ! resolution passed by that body jthe motion of Cbmrs. Madgwick and ; Hams, it was decided to support the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce. j Permission was granted to Comr. . Mudgwick to hold over his notice of ' motion re closing Qrey street until the next ordinary meeting of the Board. Rates. There wa s considerable discussion it?garding the rates, Comr. Harris holding : that for thejjurrent year the rate would j have to be increased in ordeir to meet j their liabilities incurred in connection with the main roads. Comr. Madgwick said that owners of j tarm lands m the township were paying i heavy rates, and any increase would , come very hard ontSigm. He consideron tnat town sections in the main street should be rated higher than farm lands, and considered that a man payI ing, say, only 6s on a quarter-acre was not' a ratepayer; he should pay £2 or ~d, and in his opinion the only fair way was to revert to the capital value I \ Coi?ir. ArcEbold objected to this, rei marking that theso landowners had | bought their land under the present sys- , tern and were apparently qujte satisfied i when they did so. They made fheir livm£ off the lands, and more than he . could make out of his business and he 'thought the rate fee was paying was quite in proportion. j Comr. Free was of opinion that the present system was ilard on rural landowners, and he wais inclined to favor a change. Owners of town sections should pay more rates, or build on them. It was finally reefded to hold over the matter of striking a rate for the current year until the next meeting when the result of the poll would be known j and it is hoped there will be a full I meeting of the Board. I It was decided to instruct the do<r*ax collector to take proceedings against ■nil owners of unregistered dogs, i to the amount of, £176 18s ,2d were passed for payment. This inI eludes a progress payment of £100 to ; the Hawera County Council. FOOTBALL DANCE. The dance organised by Mr-Ran"i ; Hawe at the Town Hall last Friday , was well patronised, and proved a most enjoyable evening, and tne funds of the newly-formed club will benefit to the extent of upwards of £4, and the thanks of the members are certainly due to the organiser for his kindness Good music was supplied by Mr Strong ably assisted by Misjs Sowerby and Fanny Hawe. During the evening a haka and poi dance were given, and appreciated, and Master Dan Hawe received wellnierited applause for his 'rendering of the song "Far Away in Ireland."
