CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS.
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON May 21.' The Town-planning Conference/ continued to-day. Mr Hurst ■Seager read a paper on garden cities in relation to the problems of reconstruction and repatriation. He dealt at great .length with English schemes, notably Letchworth, and urged that the decentralisation of industries by means of establish-I ing self-contained garden cities was the' only proper solution of the present' housing problems. ; A general discussior. followed, several speakers urging that the large schemes of England were not needed in NewZealand, where, however, there was great room for itown improvement. i Delegates expressed ,some dissatisfac- | tion at the method of conducting the conference, saying that ther e were too | many lengthy papers and selected speakers and not enough opportunity for general discussion. The of the morning was given Ib general discussion. Dr. Reakes, Director-General of Agriculture, said the differences between the price received by the producer for vegetables and the price paid by the consumer was_ far too large, and the garden village ought to help in solving this problem. Fruit farming settlements ought to benefit both the producer and the consumer, and the same principles of concentration and co-oper-ation could be applied to poultry, pig, and bee farming.
