ENTERTAINMENTS.

"TARZAN OF THE APES."

A very remax*kable picture, dealing first as it does with the contrast of society life in the Old Country and changing with striking rapidity through the wild and rough life of shipboard to tne primitive scenes of the African jungle, teeming with savage life human and animal. Lord Greystoke is Sent on a mission to Africa to try to suppress the slave trade, and with htm is his wife. A mutiny on the ship results in their being put ashore in the wilds, where, after a short spell, full of dangers innumerable, Lady Greystoke dies, leaving a baby son. Her husband is killed by the apes, one of whom carries off and, like the story of Romulus and Remus of ancient Home, suckles the child. H e growe up with them, like Mougli of the Jungle Stories, and after many years is restored to his people and native land. This is shortly the gist of the wonderful story. Its wonderful scenes of adventure and ihrill have to-be seen to be realised. Perhaps the most striking feature is the scenes among the woods, where loathly alligators, chattering apes, fierce gorillas, huge 6inuous snakes, and majestic lions are shown in their native Avildness. Tarzan, the white boy of the apes, grows into a Hercules, who is able to subdue the lion in single combat. His ability to convey himself quickly through the roads of the trees enables him to isave from a huge native, after a sensational fight, the charming girl who is one of the party come to Africa to investigate the mystery of the disappearance of his parents, and leads to the elucidation of the strange affair. There are numberless thrills and exciting incidents, Lut there is also a vein of amusing incident which relieves some of the tragedy. In all it is a wonderful picture. The photography is most remarkable. One wonders liow it is possible to get such great results. The lary;o nudience last night at the Opera TT'-'ise were enthusiastic in their appreciation. The great picture will be repeated to-night.
