NORMANBY

SCHOOL CONCERT

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

■There was a crowded house on Friday evening, when as a final to the opening of,the new school the pupils gave an entertainment. The amount taken at the door was probabjy a record for the hall, considering the price of admission was one shilling and all children were free. The receipts totalled £12 18s 6d. The opening song and chorus, "The Old Kentucky Home," went with a swing. "Dreamland" was a good number, and the little tots in their white nightdresses made a pretty scene. The words of this song were written by Mrs Mitchell, wife of the headmaster. The physical drill squad were excellent,. their time being almost perfect. Little Noni King was deservedly recalled "for her recitation, and Dan Hawae fairly brought down the house with his song, "Far Away in Ireland." Probably one of the best items was the duet, "Where are you going to, my pretty maid?" by Marjorie Mills and Hilda Franklyn, the singing and acting of both being splendid. The Scotch songs were good, and the Highland fling by Heather Kirgan received a well-merited recall. The poi dance had to be repeated. The piano duet by Ivy Parslow and Nina Kilvington was well ' played; indeed, the whole programme was carried out in at manner most creditable to the teaching staff. The accompaniments were ably played by Misses Burgess, Martin and F. Hawae. After the concert the floor was cleared for dancing, when there was a very large company present. Messrs Hopcroft, Hurley and H. Crocker ably controlled the floor, and excellent music was supplied by Miss Hurley. SPORTS CLUB, There was a large attendance at the sports meeting last Wednesday, when the various committees reported. Mr H. Crocker occupied the chair. It was decided to hold the first gathering on the 17th inst. in the Park, and a good programme was arranged, full particulars of which will appear in the Star. Very liberal special prizes were donated, and the club added also valuable amounts. Judges and other officials were appointed, and judging, by the amount of interest taken in the initial gathering, should be a most successful one. A dance in connection with the club • will be held on Wednesday next, for • which a large number of tickets have been sold, and it is hoped all lovers of clean sport will attend, and so help • along this, new branch of the Normanby 'Horticultural Society. THE BAND. On Sunday afternoon the Hawera Band played a1 fine selection of music in the Park, when there was a large attendance of the public It is to be hoped that this is only the forerunner of many such visits, and the band may be sure of a hearty welcome at any time.
