OBITUARY.
MR THOMAS FURLONG
AY TELEGRAPH -1"KBS» iSBOCUTION. NEW PLYMOUTH, AprTl 3. Mr Thomas Furlong, a very old resident and a Crimean veteran of the 57th Regiment, died to-day, aged 86 years.
Mr Thomas Furlong reached New Plymouth in the early sixties from India, and during nearly the whole of the time the 57th Regiment was in New Plymouth lie was in charge of the stables of Colonel Warre, the officer in command. Such a faithful servant did he prove that regular correspondence was maintained between the two until, death claimed the colonel; then Mrs Warre or her companion continued it. After his discharge from
the regiment the late Mr Furlong went j into the livery stable business, but eventually opened a hair-dressing establishment, at which he did so well that he was enabled to retire a few years ago. He was respected by all who knew him, being of a kind and >! courteous disposition. Miss Furlong (afterwards Mrs Wilson), who was matron of Hawera Hospital for some years, j was a daughter.
