PATRIOTIC LEAGUE

A meeting of the Waimate Plains Patriotic League was held in Mfl-naift Town Hall on Tuesday night. Mr Thos. McPhillips (in the absence of the chairman) presiding. Messrs Meldon, J. Taylor, P. Hammonds, A. Hansen, E. Long, C. Davies, S. McKay, and V. H. Hobday (sec,) were present. « Correspondence was read as jinder:

From War Relief Association asking the League to support a resolution in reference to basis of loaned and in which urgent cases only would be dealt with, up to £75, aaid no more large sums would be loaned v It was resolved,, on the motion of MrHansen, seconded by Mr Meldon, that the League support the resolution.

From the War Relief Association, in reference to repatriation of men, and asking local bodies and "Others to give preference to returned men. The chairman moved that the League support the suggestion, and said that everyone should do all they could for the men who returned. Seconded by Mr Long and carried.

The question of £500 on loan was left, to Messrs Bennett, McPhillips, J. Taylor and Secretary, with jjower to act. The Treasurer reported that, in addition to the £500 on loan, the society had £129 in the bank.

Mr Hansen brought up the question of peace celebrations. It was decided that as a meeting would be held later, the matter could be held over, the chairman, Cr. Long, and others, agreeing. .'._■'

Mr Hansen also brought up the question of a memorial to the soldiers, and suggested that a day be set apart for collecting funds. ..-■'■'':

Mr Long said everyone should be made to subscribe to a memorial.

The chairman said it would be a difficult matter to make everyone pay, but it was their duty to pay, and the Patriotic League should call a public meeting.

Mr McKay said it should be gone on with now.

Mr Long said many soldiers were buried in unknown graves, and the names on t^e memorial would .stand as a monument to them for all time, and lie said a list could be left at the banks, etc. It was decided that Messrs Meldon and Bennett confer, and call a public meeting to discuss tho erection of. a memorial to fallen soldiers, the meeting to be called at an early date.
