H e had ofiera trow, some citizens to.supply labor and material. 'He was sure there would be no difficulty in raising the money by subscriptions, but if there was a denoxency he hoped the Council would make good. h.o had suggested to the I County Council that it should also as-i sist to make up any deficiency. The Mayor: The County Council did not commit itself, but he judged from tne sympathetic manner i n which it received the deputation that it would support the Borough Council in this matter. A circular was received from the superintendent of the National Provident -bund pointing out the benefits to be derived from employees joining the' ™ tlir°ugh the local authorities . The special eoumuttee appointed to consider the question of the observance or laranakis Anniversary Day, recommended tlhat the Mayor . meet the > Tradesmen's Association asking their i favorable consideration to the day being ' declared an annual holiday. I The i Work® Committee recommended : That a letter be sent to the occu- ' piers of properties in High street, near the railway crossing, in regard to hay- I ing hedges seen to as requested by the Railway Department; that provided loan moneys are available High street west, on the north side, be kerbed and channelled and footpath asphalted. The recommendations were agreed to. GENERAL COMmiTTEE. The General Committee recommended, inter alia, as follows: That the action of the iiown ■ clerk in granting permission to the Heturned Soldiers' Association to hold their concert at the tarn be confirmed; that the Park ) Commit oee meet the Returned Soldiers' Association relative to application, for permission to hold further'concerts at the Park; that permission be granted Plunket Society to hold a-'fete at the Park on March 5. and also to charge <!i:or admission; tnat the Mayor and the engineer be appointed delegates to represent the Council at the town--planning conference to be held at Wellington; that the Council support the resolution submitted by the Newmarket Borough Council relative to subsidy for fire prevention; that ihe Government's attention be drawn to the shortage of dwellings for workers, and that it be requested to take the necessary steps at the earliest possible date; that a committee meeting of the whole Council be held to consider the housing question; that the Mayor be appointed to wait upon the Minister for Internal Affairs relative to Turu-turu-Mokai Park and tenure; that a committee, consisting of the Mayor, Ore Hay ton j Reid and Lewis, be a "Greater Hawera Committee" ;' that Cr Lewie be chairman of the committee, The 'foregoing recommendations were adopted. DWELLING BY-LAWS. The special committee appointed in connection with by-la wg in regard to dwelling areas, recommended: That a by-law be made to provide that frontage for dwellings to be erected in the outer be not less than 40ft; that a by-law be made fixing th© distances oi toLudary lines in respect of dwellings to be erected in the outer area at 6ft. Cr Morrissey said he would have preferred to have seek 9ft recommended, so as to prevent two houses being built on a quarter-acre section. The recommendations were adopted, and it was further resolved that the minimum distance from the street line be 20ft. ' It was agreed that the Council meet on 20th inst. to finally complete the by-laws.

PARK AND RESERVES

The Park Reserves Committee recommended: That permission be grantedl the Returned Soldiers' Association to hold a concert at the Park on February 26 and to charge for admission; that permission to the Phinket Society be extended to include a pony parade, provided it is held on the old sports ground; that the chairman interview the engineer in regard to having the Park lake cleaned out; that the Council accede to the request for the issue of three new leases to E. W. Good, in place of existing lease; that the Council consent to the transfer to A. Dixon of one of the new leases when executed; that the Council also consent to the transfer to Mrs Williamson of one of the new leases when executed. The report was adopted. ASPHALT FOOTPATHS LOAN. The engineer reported that the tarmacadam work in Glover road has been completed, and is almost completed in Gladstone street. Tar-painting will, follow later. I

ABATTOIR RETURNS The town clerk reported that the following stock were slaughtered dur- J ing the month: Bullocks 6, cows 81, ' heifers 28, sheep 335, lambs 115, calves : 18. pigs 34. The fees and rents totalled £86 15s, the fees being £4 19s 6d more than in January, 1918. The total fees for the ten months ended January 31 were £33 9s 9d in excess of those for the corresponding period last financial year. I
