FEEPINC COWS ON GREEN BUDA KALE. A LECTURE OF INTEREST TO THE DAIRY FARMER. PART 11. DURING a pa^t Summer one Southern Taranaki farmer fed seventy cows for one and. a -half hours daily on twelve acres, and during the dry weather his milk supply only dropped a few pounds per cow. Then, comparing Buda Kale with maize or vetches, the former has the decided advantage that there is no labor entailed in feeding it to the cows. The cows can be turned on to the Kale for from one and a-half to two hours daily, whereas with the other foods mentioned they have to be cut and carted out to the cows. Buda Kale is a very hardy plant and will thrive on any reasonably fertile soil, and, as already pointed out, this plant has the advantage that it can be grown to be available at at least two seasons of 'the year. For feeding, say, late in January. February, and March, sow in November or early December. For feeding during August or September, sow in February or early March. Sowing, at this date! enables the plants to be well grown before the cold weather -sets in. The-i plants should then hold their own through the winter, and with an early spring growth the crop would be ready for feeding hy the end of" July, and if fed judiciously would last for at least three months. The mode of growing and preparation of the soil is much the same as for a crop of Rape. In the spring of the year the land should be ploughed at least a few weeks before sowing, time, as early sowing enables the surface soil to be well worked and harrowed to produce a good seed bed. The seed should be drilled in (very shallow) at the rate, of about three and a-half pounds per acre. VFhen th» crop is sown in the autumn it will invariably be on land which has been cropped I during the summer. A good tilth will then be procured immediately, after ploughing, and when this can be had it will be found advantageous to have the seed sown as soon as possible on the freshly turned soil. Part 111., on "Manuring," will appear in this space nest week. Write at once for a free, booklet dealing fully on tliis wonderful Cow Food, and should you desire any information or advice re manuring any condition of land or sowing any farm or garden seeds, a letter or a personal call will receive every attention, and such information will be piven gratis IN STOCK.—A full and" fresh suppiy of Sutton'e Pedigree Seeds for the kitchen garden or farm.
