ELTHAM

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

KILLED IN ACTION

i News has reached .Eltham of the death, "killed in action,'' of Priva-te Ernest Waller, a son of one of the pioneer settlers of Eltham district. After vleavmg the farm at Mata, Private Waller resided with his mother at Eltham for some years, 'going; eventually to Christchurch to live. Prior to enlistment he renewed acquaintance with his many friends here, who will regret to hear of the sad news. PERSONAL. Quite a mild, and pleasant sensation was caused in Eltham yesterday morning, at the appearance of the athletic figure of Private W. Poster, who, it was understood, had been killed in action. Private Foster is a Main Body man, and Has seen four years of hard service,, eventually being gassed at Messines. He was, 'prior, to enlistment, in the employ of the Eltham Dairy Co., Ltd., and was. very well known, having gained some prowess at wrestling and b(»ng. He brings news of Private W. Thomas, whose photograph appeared in New Zealand illustrated papers as having been killed in action, and states that that well-known Ngaere boxer is still very much alive., and likely also to return to New Zealand shortly. FOR ACTIVE SERVICE. The following reservists from ..the 47th Reinforcement draft will entrain at Eltham on Wednesday, October 9: ■L. H. Baigent, R. Ferguson, E. C. Frost, C. Hitchcock, A. W. Holder, A. Onions, H. G. Rae, A. N. Scott, H. Thrush, C. E. Zimmerman, W. J. Swindlehurst, HOCKEY DANCE. At a meeting of the Hockey Club Committee last evening, all arrangements were made for their danceoornr ■Wednesday next. This dance enould prove one of the. most successful of the season. , ■ ' v CXHJNCILv V j At last night's meeting of the Borough Council, the gasworks manager (Mr L. J. Marriott), reported (inter alia): Owing to th^ state of the works holder . capacity being , on' the unsafe side, I recommend^ that no further consumers be added by way of cottage property until such time as it is' possible to add a new and larger holder. Much trouble is now bemg experienced'W obtain th© necessary goods to carry on our class of work.W l;jdo; advocate depriving any addition to consumers by way of gas for power^: cooking and heating purposes, as these are all daylight loads: which we are .well; able to cater for; also any shop properties already with services; and also any new building tKat may be erected in" the early future. Speaking generally,, we have sufficient goods in stock, together with home orders for very 'lessential goods in the gas industry, to carry on by way of general maintenance only. We have, I believe, enough spare meters to mee,t likely demands. These, are getting scarce and expensive just now. Again' "speaking generally; the remaining -properties that have been Sn erection and occupied "during the,!lasi eight' years; where the gas mains have been laid during the whole of this period, should not be considered in times like the present, especially:when these houses, any of them for the matter, may cause the r whole of the town to suffer a shortage any night, especially during the winter months. [Further report of Borough Council is crowded out of this issue by cable news.] ■'
