A NOTED CAVAIjRY OFFICER. ■ General Sir E. r H. H. Allenby sue- ! oeeded General Sir Archibald Murray in ! June, 1917, shortly after the double [failure of General Murray to capture Gaza. Previously he Ihad commanded the Third Army in France. In the years immediately, before the wax he was Inspector of Cavalry, and as such was responsible for the shaping of the regiments which fought at Le Gateau and several times saved the infantry of Field-Marshal French's force from envelopment by the Germans during the enemy's invading movement in France in 1914. During the Battle of the Somme his troops played a defend sive part, but they had a brilliant share in the Battle of Arras (April, 1917). His task was the capture of the southern part of the Vimy Ridge, and the ! German positions east of Arras and ! further south, while General Home operated to the north against the main part of. the Vimy Ridge. By this operation th© Third Army breached the ; northern end of the Handemiburg line, \ and in the first phase of the battle cap- ; tured 8000 prisoners and 150 guns. General AHeriby's career in Palestine has been one or unbroken, success from the* first. He captured the Gaza positions which had witihstood General Murray, by a masterly battle of manoeuvre, aird sweyt n&rtfe till he wtHaakett Jerusalem, which ' \vfts ea^tftr^l early last December. His last success, on© of the most notable victories of the whole war, is an extraordinary example of cavalry op&ratcons. ! General Alleinby is ,57 years of age j I and has a record of active, service in ' South Africa.
