SCHOOL COMMITTEES' ASSOCIATION.

HAWERA BRANCH

The quarterly meeting of thet Hawera branch of the Taranaki School Committees' Association was held in the Borough. Chambers, Hawera, on Saturday afternoon. There were' present: Messrs J. B. Murdoch (Technical College) president, R. S. Sage (Hawera), H. C. Johnson (Tokaora), H. J. Eaves (Otakeho), R. Hicks (Mokoia), J. O. Jones (Oeo), W. Coad (Te Roti). The principal business before the meeting was the consideration of the diphtheria epidemic, which was introduced by Mr Sage, who stated that it had, caused extra expense to his,, committee in carrying out certain necessary work, such as disinfecting, etc. The committees' funds were limited, and no doubt as/the matter was one which was of interest to school committees he thought it advisable to bring it forward. He thought the Education Board might be approached to see whether the Health Department could not meet the committees in the matter. The chaii-man agreed that it would be a good thing to write to the Education Board on the matter, although he did not think the Health Department would defray the cost of disinfecting. Mr Eaves supported Mr Sage. The whole difficulty was that education authorities were starved financially. Mr Sage said they must not overlook the fact that the committees had been given an Increased capitation as a war bonus, but even this did not meet the extra cost which the committees were under at the present day. He moved that the Education Board be written to regarding the question. This was seconded by Mr Hicks and carried. The chairman congratulated Mr Eaves upon his election to the Education Board. Mr Eaves was well acquainted with the requirements of the southern district, and he was sure to give very good results for his membership. Mr Eaves briefly replied. He said he would do his very best to promote the interests of education in the southern ward, which he represented. The meeting then concluded.
