TOWN BOARD

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Manaia Town Board was held in the Town Hall I last evening. Present: Messrs J. J. Meldon (chairman), A. H. Christie, W. J Taylor, C. Davis, and V. H. Hobday i (clerk). Correspondence was received from the Acting-Minister, Sir James Allan, j in reference to passing of resolution of determination to continue the war to fr victorious end. It was resolved that a meeting; of citizens be called at 2 p.m. on Monday, August 5, in Town Hall, and the business premises be asked to close from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on same day. A letter was received from Mr H. Berry, secretary of the Methodist Church, drawing attention to the in- j sufficient draining; for storm water from the roadway, and statins: that it is im- j possible to use the entrance on the road front, and asking the Board to prevent a recurrence 'of nuisance.—lt was resolved that the Board would deal with the matter. , Correspondence was received from Messrs P: ODea arid Bayley, Hawera, stating that the lessee of the Waimate Hotel had consulted them re drain. The letter stated that Mr Dunn was quite justified in the action he was taking, and. informing the Board that the solicitors were visiting the site, and then would be in a better position to judge.—The letter was received. Correspondence from the Health Officer re the same was also dealt with. The letter stated that the storm water 1 drain was blocked,, also the storm water flowing into the septic tank caused effluent from the septic tank to overflow through the hot-el yard into the street in front of hotel. The letter' asked that the nuisance be abated.—lt was resolved that the proprietor and lessee of the Waimate Hotel be written to informing them that the water was creating a nuisance by running "over I the footpath on the Main South road, by reasons of its not being led through a proper channel, and that they be asked to rectify this by bringing the! .vater dn a definite channel tcv the! boundary of their property, and then j the Board would deal with it in a proper manner. It was also resolved that any person blocking any drain in j the town boundary will be prosecuted. , j Correspondence was received from the ! i Valuation Department re improvements and amended values on account of land1 taken for railway purposes, and for- ' warding the necessary advices. | j From Mr A. 6. Bennett, stating that j Mr W. Weaver had agreed to assign the lease of sub-divisiofr 1, of section 109,! J and part section 64, block 7, Waima-te ! S.D., to Mrs Hilles.—lt was resolved that the transfer -be granted, subject to all agreements being in order. i From Mr J. Hunt, secretary Public Library, enclosing balance-sheet for the I year ending December 31, 1917, also i asking th© Board for its annual subsidy of £20.—The amount was granted. I A letter was received from F. T. Mc- | Car thy, secretary Manaia Fire Board,' I asking the Board to pay the annual I subsidy.—lt was resolved to notify the secretary of the Fire Board to send on balance-sheet before next meeting, before granting subsidy. i A report was received from Mr Hay-' ward, sanitary inspector and ranger; also a report from Manaia Town Board overseer. —Each report was received. I j Accounts amounting to £152 17s lid j were passed for payment. I PATRIOTIC DANCE. The long night dance held in the Ma-! naia Town Hall on Wednesday night in! • aid of the Patriotic Society, was a great success. Visitors were present from: ; Hawera, Okaiawa, Kaponga, Kapuni,> and Auroa. The people of Manaia did: not^ roll up as they should have. The) .; takings at the door amounted to £15. j The floor was in capital order, and the1 music by Miss Gardiner (piano), and i Mrs Cook (violin) was excellent, whilst, ' the supper was first class. Extras were' played by Misses Harcourt, Sharp,} ; Donald, Butler, Brunette, and Harold ] Arnold. The duties of M.C.'s were ear-' j ried out by Messrs T. Gardiner, 11. I i Sharp, and M. Bailey. Mr T.
