"DRIED MILK FEVER."

MR E. H. PACEY'S VIEWS

"The Waikato—indeed, I should say the whole of New Zealand, and some parts of Australia, too —has had during the last few months a very bad attack of dried milk fever," was the introductory remark of Mr H. E. Pacey, managing director of the New Zealand Dairy Association, when dealing with this subject at a welcome-home dinner tendered to him in Auckland the other evening (says the Star). He did not know if they were familiar with the symptoms, but they certainly had been confronted with some of the manifestations. Certain institutions had put forward a statement that the value of butter-fat was 3s 6d per lb, and that if the business was properly organised on proper lines 3s 6d per lb would be the value of butter-fat in the Auckland province. That was very good news if it were true, and his interest in the dairying industry was such as to cause him to say that he hoped it was for the sake of those who were producing. He believed their own company would also benefit. They had some dried milk factories. The suppliers to those factories would be glad to get 3s 6d, and what others could do they could do. He hoped the forecast would be realised. If it was, he should like to add that the gentlemen who had been instrumental in bringing about this appreciation of the position would be entitled to the most cordial thanks of the industry, and that they doubtless would receive it. They should be placed on a pedestal along with the Reynolds brothers .and Mr Wesley Spragg, who, in their day, marked epochs in the industry, and rendered such signal service as caused their names to be remembered with gratitude. If, however, they did not make good they would be credited with having hoaxed the community, and doubtless would be execrated therefor. In the course of a few days he hoped to be able to put up a proposition which would enable the possibilities of the scheme to be demonstrated in a practical way.
