MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.
SITTING IN HAWERA. A sitting of the First Wellington Military bervice Board was held at the Courthouse this morning before Me^_rs Cooper (chairman), McLaren, and Co.nsidine. • Uorporal Charles Leslie Theobald, on active seivice, applied for three weeks*- [ leave on account of his mother's illness. , Appellant, who is on active service iv [ Kgypt, apparently made the application ** direct. Only on j Saturday last a returnedsoldier of ,45, j with a son of 16, desired" to" secure a position as sharemilker, and this man "■' was quite reliable and well-educated. - Previous to that two men came in who - were desirous of securing a suitablej sized place whereon to milk on shares, i but being unable to find one, had had to go out separately on to smaller 1 places. l | Mr Weir pointed out that when this r case was previously before the Board it . was made clear that it was not a place upon w'hioh sharemilkers could profitably be jtlaoed. It was on the higher 7 | land running _up towards the mouny- I tain, and required an amount of cony \ stent improvement, work that share- ! milkers could not be expected to put on it- | a j Appell ant added that he had pencilled , out figures for the Board, showing the f position if sharemilkers were placed on x the farm. He would much .prefer sell- ., ing right out than place sharemilkers ' oh the farm. The hearing was further adjourned c till next sitting of the Board. <--- - ! The adjourned appeal of James! 3 White, cheesemaker, Whakamara, was ] further considered. Mr ODea, appeared c for the appellant. It was further adi jpurned until the next sitting. William Treanor, dairy, farmer, Normanby, withdrew his appeal. Man- , igatoki, represent.d by Mr Gow,'stated ■y that he was managing his sister's farm f at Mangorei. Her husband was in camp. i Decision was reserved. .. - Harry H&lc-roft, farmer, Whangamomona, who appealed on the ground of public interest, said he held an 0.R.P.. 1 sheep farm comprising 1209 acres. The 1 farm carried 900 to 1000 she*ep in the s winter, and 1300 in the summer. He c had no help but that which he received from two other farmers. He was in I •-- partnership with Mr O'DeA. H© was j s the last man on the road, and was 18 . miles_ beyond Whangamoniona. He ■was' c also interested in another place which did not adjoin the first farm. He did all "the work on the place. # • .- ■ p Decision was reserved. - ; Mr Etherington appeared for Charles 3 William Schultz, dairy farmer, Hawera. Fciix Hun- [ ger, dairy farmer, Toko (Mr Powell) was again before the B> _trd. Appellant stated that he had seen a member of the 1 Efficiency Trustees, who had advised ' him against employing sharemilkers; he ; had, however, advertised for sharemilkers, when he received 25 applications. He had .not accepted any application • because he was unable to make aia*ange- • ments for supervising the place. His • brothers-in-law were unable to supervise . the farm. Decision reserved.
