The meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, convened for last evening, was postponed. At a meeting of the Presbytery of Taranaki in Hawera on Tuesday, it was intimated that Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, in response to a request from Eev. T. Tait, Moderator of the Prestery, had offered to spend a week visiting the congregations of Taranaki in September. The intimation was received with acclamation, and the Rev. T. Tait entrusted with, the drawing up of an itinerary. A meeting of dairy suppliers was held at Te Awamutu on Monday, to consider the proposed milk powder, establishment at Te Awamutu. Mr Goodfellow said it had been found ad-! visable, in the present position, to float a new company, to be styled the New Zealand Co-operative Milk Foods, Ltd., with a capital of £100,000. This was intended, hot a« a means of coming into conflict with the existing Waikato Co-operative Dairy Company, but rather to be subsidiary to it. The working would be somewhat similar to the system obtaining in the management of the already established cheese i factories owned by the Waikato Company, which is subsidiary to the Waikato Co-operative Dairy Company. Each factory would, to all intents and purposes, be a separate establishment controlled by a directorate of three! members. Local control, and the mat-! ters affecting the factory itself would bo administered by the district directorate. Until .such time ais more than four milk powder factories are estab-. lished the general directorate would j consist of. twelve members, being the i four local directorates working con-j jointly on the general administrative | body. All general questions, affecting the wider policy of the company, would be controlled by this directorate, the intention being to secure a system which, while not impairing in any way a system of district control of the affairs of the district, wotild bring about ■ a wider organisation on truly co-op- j erative lines to control the industry in a more general way. He explained what had been dor.o in the flotation of the new company and in advancing the proposals to such a stage as to permit operations to be immediately fore- , shadowed. At this stage the agreei ment between the suppliers and the i company, preparatory of its being [signed, was read to the meeting. There 'was considerable enthusiasm and the; signatures were readily forthcoming,, | the supply from over 1000 cows being assured at the meeting. Smoker's heart 'is a distressing malady caused chiefly through the eitecis of an alkaloid called nicotine, which is extremely poisonous. Strong tobaccos, with a high percentage of nicotine, .should therefore be avoided. When selecting a brand, the smoker should not be guided by the appearance alone, because even an apparently mild cigarette tobacco of a bright lemon color may contain—and often does conI tain —an excess of nicotine. But more injurious as a rule are the dark juicy grades meant for pipe smoking. This juice fouls the pipe and is responsible i tor the soppiness and bite; it also imj pairs the combustibility.
