AUSTRALIAN NEWS

SYDNEY, July 18

As a sequel to the motor car and jewel robbery, the police learned that the thieves would attempt to dispose of the proceeds, and set a trap at certain pawnbrokers' shops. A man appeared, but evidently recognised the detective, and fired point blank, wounding the detective twice. An exciting chase, followed, in which other detectives joined. Fifteen shots were exchanged, but the suspect escaped.—Press Association.
