Mr C. E. Statham, member of the House of Representatives for Dunedin Central, has been drawn in the ballot £.mong the Class B reservists. An obliging garage proprietor, anxious to take advantage of every prospect of business, was called upon about a week ago by a young man, Frederick E. Simmiss, who stated that he was the son of a wealthy gentleman residing at Wanganui, and wished to buy a car, says the Post. A trial was suggested, a chauffeur was provided from the garage, and a spin was made along the Hutt road. After some distance had been covered, Simmiss requested the driver to make enquiries at a house by the roadside, and in his absence drove away with the car. Later Simmiss was found in an intoxicated condition at Upper Hutt, and the car was found standing on the roadside. He was charged before Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court with being found ! drunk, but, on the application of the police, was remanded for a week.
