Mr W. H. Swanger, secretary of the Wanganui Education Board, who r*cently underwent'an operation, has fco far recovered as to be able to retain' to his home. During the past few weeks there have been many complaints as to the unsatisfactory nature of the telephone service. The matter was referred to at the annual meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce last night. Members gave it as their opinion that the trouble was due to he lack of supervision, and it was finally resolved to call the attention of the Department to the complaints received. Rifleman C. R. (Chill) Tarrant, whose death in action has been reported, was-a son of Mrs K. Tarrant, of Princes street, Hawera. Rifleman Tarrant left with the loth Reinforcements with the 3rd N.Z. Rifle Brigade, afterwards being transferred to the 3rd Light Trench Mortar Battery. He was wounded in the neck at the battle of Messines, but after a short spell returned to the trenches. At one time the late soldier was employed by the Hawera and Manutahi Dairy Companies, but previous to his enlistment he was on the Waikato Dairy Company's staff. BURNS AND SCALDS.
