RESERVIST SENTENCED TO
PRISON
Reuben Baldwin, who was defended by Mr ODea, appeared on remand in the Magistrate's Court this morning upon a charge of failing to make application for enrolment in the First Division of the Expeditionary Force Reserve. The defendant, who had pleaded guilty, was remanded yesterday to see whether it was possible for the military authorities to have him medically examined. Senior Sergeant Till explained that the Group Commander had telegraphed to Wellington, and had received a reply that the Defence Department could not deal with the defendant until he had been served with a notice calling him up. This was a necessary procedure which had to be gone through. Mr ODea asked if the defendant could not be allowed out on parole until the notice arrived to be served on him.
The 6enior sergeant opposed this course, saying there was always the possibility of a man in Baldwin's position running away into the back country, where it would be difficult to locate him.
Defendant was sentenced to twentyone days' imprisonment.
