FRANCE AND BELGIUM.

FURTHER BRITISH PROGRESS.

THE VERDUN OPERATIONS,

.ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL FRENCH ATTACK.

DESTRUCTION OF TANKS,

GERMAN CLAIMS RIDICULOUSLY EXAGGERATED.

LONDON, Aug. 27. Sir Douglas Haig reports: We captured the enemy's positions on a front ■of over a mile eastward of Hargeoourt and penetrated for half a mile, carrying the strong, points of Cologne farm and Talakof. The enemy, in the morning, attacked, using flammenwerfer, on the Ypres-Menin road and momentarily reooeupied the north-west corner of the Inverness copse, but a counter-attack restored the positions. We slightly advanced south-east of St. Julien. The ©nemy recaptured a post south-west of Xombartzyde. We brought down seven -enemy aeroplanes. A Trench communique states: North «f Verdun there is the greatest artillerying on the right bank of the JMeuse, between Samogneux and the Chaume woods. We slightly progressed •n the left bank south of Bethincoust. LONDON, Aug. 27. A French communique states: On the right of the Meuse we successfully attacked between Mormont farm and Bois le Channe. We captured all our objectives on a four kilometre front to a depth of a kilometre. The whole of the Bois dcs Posses and the Bois de Beaumont are in our lands. We reached the southern outskirts of the village of Beaumont. Our .artillery caught and dispersed •with heavy losses a violent counterAttack debouching front Bois de la IWavrilla. Wireless German official: The French gained initial successes near Beaumont. We subsequently drove them fcaok. Reuter Service. LONDON, Aug. 26. Headquarters states that the German claim of the destruction of twenty-one tanks is ridiculous, as only a fraction •f this number was knocked out by the tamk destroyere, known ac anti-tank turrets. The success of these might have been greater, but the crews of many were unnerved by the line of advancing tanks, and joined in a general stampede, scuttling back to their lwlee. ' , ■•.;-)
