INCREASE OF SOLDIERS' PAY.

FIRST RECIPIENTS OF NEW

ORDERS

I LONDON, Aug. 25. The Evening Standard foreshadows that soldiers' pay will shortly be increased to 3s or 3s 6d daily. Long lists of the first recipients of the Order of Companions of Honor and various classes of the Order of the British Empire have been issued. The men and women chosen for the distinction are drawn from every walk of life, whose services during the war have won particular notice. One class of the Order consists of a medal awarded for services to men and women engaged in manual and other war work, for acfc of great courage, self-sacrifice, high example, initiative, perseverance, skill, resource and invention. An announcement foreshadows that recommenda- ] tions of fellow workers for worthy re- ! cipients will be considered. ! It is further announced that the ! Governments of Inoia and the Dominions have agreed that lists of recipients of the Order shall appear at ; subsequent dates. Civil service, military and naval awards nave been similarly deferred. The Order of Companions of Honor, which was conferred on seventeen persons of both sexes, was headed by General Smuts, and includes the Marchioness of Lansdowne, Miss Violet Markham, Mr Wardle, M.P., Mr Wilkie, M.P., Lord Burnham. The list of five Dames Grand Cross of the British Empire is headed by the; Qneen. The thirteen Knights Grand Cros© include the Duke of Connaught, Lords Emmott, Gladstone and Sydnenham, arid Sir Arthur Pearson. The five Dames Commanders include the Dowager Marchioness of Dufferin and Mrs Alfred Lyttelton. The forty-three Knights Commanders of the British Empire comprise administrators, and advisers of various Government bodies. The seventy-nine Commanders include Mr Appleton (secretary of the General Federation of Trade* Unions) and Mr Havelock Wilson (of the Seamen's Union). The seventy officers of tlie Order include members of trades unions and officials. The following New Zealander ha« been awarded the Distinguished Service Order: Major N. W. Thorns, for valuable reconnoitring under heavy fire. Military Cross: Lieuts. D. C. Armstrong and E. A. Winchester and Captain Marr, for services in Mesopotamia. One New Zealander has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
