SECOND DIVISION LEAGUE.

A meeting of this league was held on Wednesday night, when there was a good attendance. Mr G. D. Gow presided.

Messrs Stewart and Crabtree, deleI gates to the Wellington conlerence, reported yon the result of the conference. In the course of his report Mr Stewart stated that in various quarters it had been stated that it was a shirkers' league. He gave this a most emphatic denial. The attitude of the league was based on the fact that every head of a family had two duties —one to his family and one to his country. The Government had by legislation taken away from the individual the onus of deciding between; that being so, the league heartily assents to the proposition that every man should go to the front when called. It has passed a formal resolution to this effect, and had given a most solemn assurance on this point to M.P.'s and Ministers; consequently, the married men in the" interval left to them before they go into camp turned wholeheartedly to the carrying out of the other primary duty they owe to their wives and families. As to shirkers, he believed the greatest number of them were financial shirkers.

Mr Wilson quoted figures giving the status of the league. A vote of thanks was passed to the delegates.
