TEMPORARY ENEMY GAINS

The High Commissioner reports from London at 4.40 p.m. on July 11: Sir Douglas Haig reports: "Yesterday evening, after 24 hours' intense bombardment on the Nieuport front, the enemy, having demolished the dunes defence by destroying the Yhei bridge and isolating the sector, penetrated 600 yards on a 1400 yards front, reaching the right bank of the Yser, opposite Lombartzyde. After temporarily gaining some advanced positions he was driven back by a counter-attack.
