RIVERLEA FARMERS' UNION
At a. meeting of the above on Monday evening, Mr G. Gibson brought up the question iof Mr C. A. Wilkinson's- Abolition of Toll-Gates Bill, and after discussion showing the harm that theabolishing of the toll-gates would do to the local ratepayers and the great amount of extra rates which would be thrown upon theTn, it was decided,, upon the motion of Mr O'Neill, seconded by Mr Gibson, to send to the* Eitham County Council the following; resolution: This meeting of tne Riverlea branch of the N.Z. Farmers' Union is utterly opposed to Mr C. A. Wilkinson's Abolition of Toll-Gates Bill, considering the* heavy extra rates which would be thrown upon the ratepayers-, of the Eltham County, and seeing that the toll-gate is a fair and equitablemethod of taxation, catching as it does those who mostly use the roads, and' those users of the roads also who do not pay any rates whatsoever, and this meeting therefore requests the ElthamCounty Council to arrange petitions; opposing the Bill." The motion waftcarried unanimously, those members; present who_ own motor cars saying" they were quite content and happy to pay the tolls after their experience of" certain counties where toll-gates do not exist.
