HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough Council was held last night; present, the Mayor (Mr E. Dixon), Crs. 0. R. K. Gumming, E. B. Bates, E. Mornssey, J. W. Harding, T. C/'Gorm. ley, D. J. Goodwin, E. C. Hayton, J. G. Osborne. Leave of absence was granted to O. L. A. Bone. GENERAL COMMITTEE. The General Committee presented, inter alia, the following recommendations:—That the South Taranaki Club's request, to have road in front of its premises improved, be referred to the Works Committee, with power to act; that an owner of an insanitary building be notified to effect repairs as requested by the district health officer; that •the police and inspector be asked to take action with regard to persons riding or driving vehicles without lights after dark; that a letter be sent to the South Taranaki Automobile Association drawing their attention to the matter of dazzling lights on cars, and asking the Association to use their best endeavors to see that this matter is attended to; that a reply be sent to the Minister of Internal Affairs, stating^ that the Council is prepared to supply burial plots free of cost for members of the Expeditionary Force who die prior to their discharge from such force, and also, later, to permit of the erection by the Government of suitable headstones or memorials; that seeing the objects contained in the Na-t Beamish Development scheme pamphlet have been submitted to the National Efficiency Board, there is no need for the ! Council to take any action in the matfter; that the matter of house numbering be deferred for the present; that; ! the Red Cross Society be requested to ! see that all meat sold by it is duly inspected by the Government inspector, and the Councill will forego abbatoir fees on such stock; that seeds and plants required for cemetery be obtained up to the value of £2 10s; that ' taking into consideration the state of the borough finances, the Council regrets that it cannot accede to the town clerk's request for an increase of salary. The report was adopted without dis- ' cussion. ABATTOIR COMMITTEE. The Abattoir Committee recommended that various small improvements and i manntenance work be carried out, in- I eluding attention to hedges and some new planting. Estimate of cost to be . obtained by next meeting. j ABATTOIR RETURNS. ! The town (clerk reported that 90 caittle, 276 sheep, 7 calves, and 68 pigs were slaughtered during the month. The ' fees and rents totalled £71 19s 6d a decrease of £2 9s 6d, as compared with the corresponding month of last year. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer (Mr J. Sturrock) Te-! ported, inter alia, as follows:— Asphalt Footpaths Loan—The tarmacadam footpaths of Vogel, Surrey, ' and Wilson streets have been completed ' at costs of Is l(Hd, Is 10d, and Is 9|d per square yard respectively. Amount m estimate 2s per square yard. An effort is being made to.complete the tarpaanting ;of footpaths itar-macadamed this season. Weather conditions are , difficult..

Sewer Extension Loan—The sewers in Gladstone street (south) and Erin street nave been completed at costs of £11 9s lOd and £10 17s 9d per chain respectively. Amount in estimate £14. The construction of sewer in Gladstone street (north) progresses. Residents in Gladstone street (south) and Erin street can now be notified to connect house drains to sew«r«. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee recommended that Miss Whittington's salary be increased to £104. This was agreed to. CAMBERWELL ROAD. Cr. Goodwin said that it had been represented to him that Camberwell road was in a dangerous state, and if it were so, something should be done to make it safe. If nothing of a permanent character could be put in hand at present, at least the big holes should ! be filled in. The Mayor: These people will have to ! exercise a little patience. The Council is doing one road now, and it cannot do ! all the work ait once. i The engineer stated that some of the ' holes had been filled in. Cr. Gormley said that from what he had heard from one resident the road was in a bad condition.

Cr. Morrissey (chairman of the Finance Committee) admitted that the road was bad, but he did noit think it was in a really dangerous condition. He thought the Council should wait before taking definite action until they had heard what amountt the County Council intended to expend upon the boundary roads, when the Council could re-arrange their finances. As soon as the Council had heard from the County Council a special meeting of the Borough Council could be held to deal with the question of putting Camberwell road in order. He moved in this direction.

Cr. Osborne seconded

Cr. Goodwm said the holes in the road should be filled in at once. Even T; ,was spent in this direction it would be money well spent. The Mayor said that if the road were really dangerous the engineer had the power to close the road if he thought it was necessary. Cr. Harding said he had seen the road and it was undoubtedly in a bad condition.

Cr Gumming suggested that the road be closed until after the special meetThe motion was carried. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee reported that the question of procuring metal from the Waingongoro beach had been referred to the Boundary Roads Committee to consider and report. The committee submitted the following recommendations: That an automatic electric pumping station be installed m High street as recommended hv the engineer; that the Hospital Board be written to, asking that all sewage which might contain germs of infectious diseases be sterilised; that property owners in Gladstone street, Erin street, Egmont street, Giover and Waihi roads be notiiVr* ?r conne°t Premises with sewer; that Messrs Duffill and Gibson's request to waive building by-laws relating to division wall (Johnston and 00. s new premises) be granted as recommended by the engineer.
