MAHOE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

It is with extreme regret that I have to repoiTt the sudden death of one of our most respected settlers, Mr E. J. Davies, of the Duthie road. For several years his health has caused his friends much anxiety, and on one occasion, at least, his condition was so grave thajt his life was despaired of. I understand that this morning, while in one of the fields, he was seized with a heart attack and passed quietly away shortly afterwards. Mr Davies was a man of sterling worth, but of a very retiring 'disposition. His health was largely responsible for his not taking an active part; in local affairs, but on every occasion when an appeal for help for a worthy cause was made, he gladly responded. Mr Davies was a native of Wales, and a son of a clergyman. About 10 or 12 years ago he emigrated to New Zealand, and took up land in the Kaponga district, removing about seven years ago to the farm on the Duthie road which he held at the time of his death. As a farmer he was thorough and successful; as a husband and father all that could be desired, and as a friend and neighbor most highly respected and trusted. A man whose word was his bond. Mr Davies left a wife and three sons and three daughters, and fto them we tender our deepest sympathy.
