EXEMPTION APPEALS.

The First Wellington Military Service Board sat again yesterday. In the cases of J. G. McCarty and M P Ford, reserved decisions, tne Board'dismissed the appeals and grant. Ed the appellants Leave until August 21 The appeal of L. W. Caitchpole was adjourned until the next sitting in Hawera, to enable the appellant to supply the Board with particulars ot his financial position. . In the appeal of Otto Reiehardt, laborer, Waitotara, for whom Mr p Dea | appeared, which was previously before j the Board, appellant gave evidence that he was born of German: parents, and that he could speak the German j language. Mr ODea said the whole point was whether the Defence authorities would send men of alien parentage away, considering that the appellant's brother, who went through the Gallipoli campaign, and served for a time in France, was withdrawn from the front. In reply to the military representative, the appellant said he was born in Wanganui. He had no wish to live in -Germany. "The country I was born in is good enough for me," he added. The appeal of Thomas Henry Carr, Pohokura. who was represented by Mr ODea, was adjourned until the first sitting in August.; The appellant wrote i that he was ill. Owen Philip Murphy, farmer, Mere. "mere, for whom Mr Welsh appeared, appealed on the ground of public interest and undue hardship. Evidence was given by Mrs Murphy, that she was working a mixed farm of 328 aores and that if appellant had to go she would be unable to manage the place. Two sons had fallen at Gallipoli, two were serving in France, and one was in camp. She desired exemption until one of the sons returned. Daniel Murphy, brother to the appellant, stated that he had enlisited several times and on each occasion had been turned out, and was finally classified C 2. He was at present farming in the back country behind Te Kuiti, and had j endeavored to sell dr lease his place in ; order to come down and manage his mother's place. Evidence was also given by appellant. Mer Welsh said Mrs Murphy had desired him to state that she did not wish to «tand in the way of her son doing his duty, in view of the fine record of th« family, and if the Board would grant the appellant exemption until December, the boy would then be ready to goDecision was reserved. Subsequently the Board dismissed the appeal and granted leave until December 30, provided appellant remains in his present position., Frank Close, dairy farmer, Ararata, represented by Mr Spratt, who asked for time until October to enable him to arrange some financial matters, had his appeal dismissed, and he was granted leave until October 16. The appeal of John Daniel Rowe, dairy farmer, Ngaer.e, whoso case was previously before the Board, was reconsidered. Appellant said he had not attempted to obtain a working manager, but he had advertised for sharemilkers. None of the applications he received were quite suitable. / Decision was reserved.. Subsequently .the Board dismissed the appeal and granted leave until August 21. The appeal of Ernest Bertie Candy, farm hand, Auroa. was allowed on the ground that he is not a reservist, he being under age John Dawson, farmer, Hawera, and John Eric Whyte, farmer, Cardiff, withdrew their appeals, which were formally dismissed. The appeal of Ernest Ulric Coombe, farm hand, Oaonui, was adjourned for hearing at New Plymouth on Wednesday. The Board adjourned until 10 o'clock this (Tuesday) morning.
