Mr W. H. Harvey, of Petone, hagbeen appointed assistant borough inspector to the New Plymouth Borough. Council. A Christchurch message last night reported that Mr Duncan Rutherford, the* well-known North Canterbury pastoralist (brother of Mr A. W. Rutherford., ex-M.P.), died somewhat suddenly yesterday afternoon. He entered a pri- , yate hospital the previous night, suffering from an internal trouble. Lately his name has been closely associated': with the Queen Mary Hospital at Hanmer SprmgSj for convalescent soldiers,. I to which institution he has extended unbounded generosity. Among those killed in France recently is one of Auckland's most distinguished footballers—G. Sellars. He represented Auckland province for several years, was a member of the nativeteam that visited Australia, and also 1 a member of the New Zealand team, that toured California. Three members of the last-named combinationhave made the supreme sacrifice—H • Dewar, A. Downing, and G. Sellars. News has been received of the death' m action in France, on June 21, of Corporal Tom Russell, a son of 'the* late Mr W. J. Russell, South road, *ew Plymouth. Previous to enlisting; he was engaged in farming in the Hawera and Manaia districts. He joined' the Main Body of the Expeditionary Force, and left as a driver in the Field Ambulance. At the time of his death* Corporal Russell was an acting-bom-bardier. .Mr W. McDonald, who for the pastnine years has been general manager* of the Kaupokonui Dairy Company (writes our Otakeho correspondent) is*, severing his connection with the company, having purchased a big farm atMorrmsville. His position will indeed be hard to fill so capably, and the?* company will find it hard to obtain a manager that will bring such honor to himself and such, distinction to th& company as has done Mr McDonald Residents of Eltham (remarks theArgus) were all very pleased and proud7 to learn of the distinction awarded" hergeant Donald S. McLeod, who hasbeen decorated with the Military Medal. The young fellow is a son of Mr and Mrs W. S. McLeod, of Chiselhurst, some of the oldest settlers inEltham, and they are heartily congratulated on the honor earned by their son.
