MANAIA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

MEMORIAL SERVICE.

I A memorial service was held in the I Manaia Presoyterian Church on Sunday The Rev. T. Tait. wni> j conducted tne service, referred in feei- ! ing terms to the loss the congregation [and the community had sustained in jthe passing of Trooper William Ciaguo ! ("killed in action, June 7"). and Lance- ' Corporal Colin Campbell ("diea of j wounus, June 21"). xakmg as his text ithe words "He knoweth; He re- ! meinbereth; He hath compassion," he--showed that now, as in the days of the Psalmist, rest of mind was only to be found m times of stress by going back ito the great elemental trutn s of oui~ rehgious faith. - | At the close of his sermon thepreacher, before quoting the expressivelines of Whittier— "Wnen on my day |of life the night is falling"—said \ Anew the great issues of life are pressed upon us. The tidings of thelast few days has put all life in a new . perspective. Under the shadow of a great sorrow do we at this, time draw : near to the everlasting truths. Trooper* j Wilnam Claque I never met; but, havmg come to know those whom he- . called his friends, I honor his memory. Colin Campbell 1 have met on one or two occasions. Him also I knew principally through his friends. The hold he has on the esteem of those whoknew him—in day school, in Sunday ; school, and in manhood—makes me almost envious of them; a, rich treasure it is to have memory of such a one. ; Such as these men are they to whom: ' the Empire owes the strength, the courage, the high valor that ensure for her victory in this giant fight against evil. And the remembrance of ! such men should strengthen us to do each our part in conserving and extending that which is best in our national life. We do not as a congregaj tion extend our sympathy to the sorrowing relatives. < We rather join witli them in mourning the loss of true* friends. We share with them the hope : of a reunion in the silent land." Suitable hymns were reverently sung , by the large congregation, and Miss. Bridge, who preeadM at tihe org-*-*'. rendered voluntaries in keeping with. { the service. The church was suitably draped for the occasion.
