Mr F. M. B. Fisher has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Colonial Institute.

Mr Charles Chaplin, of moving picture fame, cabled £30,000 from America to England as an investment in the "Win the War" Loan.

It is reported that Ada Reeve, the preatest comedienne of the English stage, is coming to New Zealand, and that her tour will commence in August or September.

Mr A. W. Tugwell, of the instructional 'staff of the Hawera Technical College, who was drawn m the last ballot, has been rejected by the Medical Board for active service, but passed for home service.

Mr Chas. Schlisky has been appointed by the Trinity College of Musi« to visit" New Zealand this year, as examiner in connection with the practical examinations. He is expected to arrive in the Dominion about the enci of July.

Among railwaymen drawn in the second railway ballot at Wellington on Thursday were the following:—M. B. Cleary, porter, Hawera; M. Lynch, surfaceman Waitotara; T. Magee, surfaceman, Stratford; D, R. S. Munro. clerk, Hawera; J. O'Brien, surfaceman, Hawera; F. W. O'Connor, guard, Hawera; F. J. Stephens, clerk, New Plymouth. It is believed that it is the intention of the Defence Departmentto have the 200 men drawn medically examined as soon as possible, and from the^ number passed as medically fit a certain quota will be aent to camp.

The Dominion says that before he left Wellington for the front, Briga-dier-General B. C. Freyberg, V.C., the youngest man holding that distinguished position in the British Army, was employed as a dentist by the firm ot Tripe and Ellis. Mr Geo Tripe, of that jfirm, has sent to the Brigadier-General 'a, cable message of congratulation on behalf of the dentists of Wellington, and Mr Maurice Denniston a similar message on behalf of the whole of the dental profession of New Zealand.

A hospital and progress report gives the name of Wilnam Home, Taranaki, as a severe case.
