ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Eltham branch of the Overseas Club celebrated Empire Day at a smoke concert last night. The president (Mr C. H. White) was in the chair, and was supported by Mr Buckeridge, vice-president. Messrs C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., the Mayor (Mr Crump), and chairman of the County Council (Mr Belcher) were also present. The guests sat down to a neatly- ! laid supper. After the usual loyal toast of his Majesty the King the following toasts were honored: "Army and Navy," proposed by Mr Smalley and responded £o by Rev. G. W. Dent: "Our Allies" (Messrs Gow and Parrott), "Overseas Club" (Messrs Buckeridge and White), "Legislature" (Messrs Dent and Wilkinson), "Local Bodies" (Messrs Heslop and Criimp and Belcher). Songs and recitations were contributed by Messrs Dent, Buckeridge, Parrott and Smalley. SEND-OFF. The settlers of Rotokare gave a send-off to Mounted Trooper Gilbert Flavell in Mr Death's barn last night. There were about a hundred people present, including friends from Mata, Mangatoki aiid Eltham. Mr Babbage, on behalf of the residents of Rotokare, presented Trooper Flavell with a wristlet watch, and in doing so congratulated him on having volunteered for the service of the Empire. He (Mr Babbage) believed that Trooper Flavell would worthily uphold the traditions of the British soldier, and the people of Rotokare hoped that he would return to them with a V.C. They wished him Godspeed and a safe return. Trooper Flavell thanked the people of Rotokare for their kind wishes and token of goodwill, and said he would endeavor to fulfil their expectations of him. A most enjoyable dance was held.
