BRITISH TRADE METHODS.
REASONS FOR CRITICISM.
The annual -.report of the Wellington j Chamber of Commerce states that j "since the outbreak of war much criti_ cism has been Levelled at British commercial methods, and comparison has been made with German methods, often to the detriment of the former. Numerous writers in economic and commercial magazines have pointed to the necessity for more efficient organisation , in British commercial management and of more extensive scientific research, and the application of science to indus- j try; Germany's commercial progress be_ ing pointed to as an example of what is to be attained. After the war a keen struggle for world commercial supremacy has been forecasted, and it is opportune for the British manufacturer and the British commercial man to 'take stock' of his business methods. "Undoubtedly much of the conservatism in British methods,, the unwillingness to alter systems that in the past have proved effective, yet to-day may compare badly with systems elsewhere, will disappear. Tbe gigantic and universal efforts made by British manufacturers or_ commodities of all descrip. tions during the past two years have opened up avenues of ■ development possibly not previously attempted."
