SOUTH TARANAKI WINTER SHOW.

PAST AND FUTURE

I At tlie annual meeting of the South j Taranaki Winter Snow, Mr D. J. GoodI win, the president, occupied the chair. I Several apologies were put in for members unable to attend. The principal business was the dealing with the report and balance-sheet, wiiich were read, 1 disclosing a very satisfactory state of affairs. The chairman said, inter alia: The results financially continue to be satisfactory, this year yielding a record return for the show, being a profit of" £349 5s 9d; but interest on mortgages have increased, and as the new hall cpuld not be tenanted until after the show, there was no return for rent, except during September and October of this year. Consequently the nee profit, after writing off £15 os bad debts, only shows at £268 4s 9d. Of this the directors propose applying £100 to depreciation on plant, carrying the balance to reserve account in order to provide in part for the additions of £180 to plant account, rendered necessary by the new building. During the year the buildings were added to. The new addition was completed in reinforced concrete from Princes street to Albion street at a cost of £2700, and has been named the Kitchener Hall. The frontage to Prin-' ces street has an up-to-dateupffice, now in the occupation, of the secretary. ' A poultry halllias been built at the side of the wing, but is oniy a temporary structure. The company was "honored by having the building formally opened by their Excellencies the Governor and Lady Liverpool. The thanks of the company are due to those gentlemen who signed the guarantee to the Bank of New Zealand for the necessary money for the flew buildings, also to Mr Hooker for his unremitting energy and tact in managing the show, and to the secretary for going into past records and recovering from tenants the arrears of rates and insurance unpaid in past years, amounting in all to £73 16s AVhen the company was formed it was considered that a nominal capital < f £3000 would be sufficient. After the %£nl ear--,the ca Pital was increased to £5000, and at the present time £1 1,489 •is Id has been expended on land arid buildings. The show buildings now cover aU ao^A of 44>0()0 square feet > and there are 8000 square feet available for addi tional ouildings. If this were covered it would provide' space for som c time to come. The growth of the show has been phenomenal, and we are told by those competent to judge that it is one of the best—if not the besl>-in the Dominion. In face of this growth we shall have to keep in view the adding to our present buildings. More capital is required however, and a proposal will shortly be put to you for increasing the capital from £5000"to £10,000. If sufhfiint were subscribed to liquidate our mortgages the company could pay 5 per cent. It only requires the right men to take this matter in hand and the road is easy.. The chairman also referred to the progress that the show had made during the past two years. In 1910 the entry fees were £81 17s; in 1916, life I°S- J? 19U s Pecial fees were £155; in 1916, £304 10s. In 1914 £Y?^ $" IZSf ¥ S 16s 5 in 1916 > 111 1914 door receipts were foi 9? }*? ,4d : m 1916 > £628 9s 3d. In • in^l receiP*s were £977 10s sd; m 1916 £1202 19s 7d. The profits had 4! 1,2^4^ 1912 ' £194 8s 6d J 1913 £52 14s 2d; 1914, £187 2s 6d- lQ]«i £265 3 S 3d/1916, 3£417 2s 10d ' These figures spoke for themselves. Considerable additions had been made to r>rovide extra space, but they were stifl unable to meet the requirements of exhibitors m that respect. The report and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted. The three retiring directors (Messrs C Goodson, H. Washer and B. C Bennett) were re-elected, and Mr E Wills was appointed auditor for the ensuing year. & TiTA^ a subfeWnt meeting of directors Mr JJ. J. Goodwin was re-elected chairman. s • F£ r is y£F's show matters are well in hand. There has been a conference with the dairy factory managers, and the dairy schedule has been revised, and several improvements made A conference with the honey producers is to be held with the object of improving this section of the show. £or over "twelve months the directors Jiave been endeavoring to arrange with air Dalton, the British Trade "Commissioner, for an exhibit of British manufactured goods, and this has at last been defimtely settled, as already mentioned in the Star. A conference is to -v bei weS, n the representatives of the ?u / 11 the,Tradesm6n's Association and the Chamber of Commerce, with the object of making during next show week a great exhibit of British goods in all the shop windows.
