THE DEUTSCHLAND'S RETURN

HER CAPTAIN'S YARN

(Received Oct. 24, 11.20 a.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 23

Captain Koenig, describing 'the Dexitsehland trip in a message to the Now York American, says: "Early in the morning I saw British destroyers and ordered the engineer to submerge. The 'submarine dived so steeply that it went down at an angle of 36 degrees and dug. its bows into the mud at the sea's bottom. The bows held fast while the stern was swinging violently back and forth, and as the water was shallow I was afraid the stern would become visible. The ship's aft tanks were quickly flooded, but the bows were so deep in the mud that we only returned to the horizontal slowly. We had much manoeuvring before the bows were released and we continued our voyage."
