WAVERLEY-WAITOTARA RACING

CLUB

Weather conditions were excellent for the annual gathering of the Waver-ley-Waitotara Kacing Clul> on Labor Day, and a very large crowd was present. The fields in all the races were good, and speculation on the totalisatcr was animated, the sum of £23.100 going through the machine, an increase of £4777 over the amount handled last year. The racing proved interesting, the finishes for the most part being very close, and not one first favorite prevailed throughout the day. Back--1 ers' judgment, however, was"not altogether astray, as five events out of the eight were Avon by horses ranking as second favorites. No accidents nor protests marred the harmony of proceedings, which were capably managed by Secretary W. Macfarlane and his assistants. The only Hawera-trained horse to win a race was Munition, who was also v second in another race, but Veto, Fidelio, and Henry Clay finished m second berth in various events. The most successful jockey was W. Young, who rode three winners, whilst X Lanibess, A. Gordon, A. McMillan, J. Cathro, and 0. McCarten each rode one.
