THE LATEST OFFENSIVE.

SEVERE AUSTRIAN REVERSE

PROOF OF ALLIED UNITY

RELIEF FOR HARD-PRESSED ROUMANIANS INTENDED.

(Received Oct. 13, 9.25 a.m.) ■ ROME, Oct. 12. The Italian offensive was preceded by live days of intense artillery bombardment and great aerial activity. As^the result of the fighting the Austrians suffered their heaviest reverse since General Cadorna's offensive early in August. The weather recently has made progress most difficult. The Duke of Aosta commanded the attacking army, which was the same &&, that which covered itself with glory at Gorizia. The assaults resulted in the capturing of several elaborately fortified lines, bringing the Italian front within thirteen miles of Trieste. ' General Cadorna's push gives further proof of the unity of the Allies, and was intended to assist the Roumanians, who are being hard pressed in Transylvania, and also to prevent Austria from reinforcing the Lemberg front.
