(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Mrs Walters, of Manaia, received a telegram from the Minister of Defence stating that her son, Private Leslie Walters, had been wounded in France. His many friends, wish him a, very speedy recovery. Mr and Mrs R. Hunt^ of Lower Nor-* manby road, have received a, message from the Defence Minister saying that Sergt. Leonard Hunt has been wou^dV ed in France. His many friends wish him a very speedy recovery. "THE SUPREME SACRIFICE."A gloom was . cast over Manaia when wordftWas received that Corporal A. J. Gilmour had paid the supreme sacrifice in France. Arthur had spent all his li_r in this district, and was known and liked' by all. He received his primary education in the Manaia public school, and matriculated at Nelson College. At the outbreak of war he was studying dentistry atThe Dunedin University. He went to the front in the Sixth Reinforcements. He saw much fighting in the Gallipoli campaign, and at the time of the evacuation of the Peninsula he was suffering from frost-bitten feet, but quickly recovered, and after a time in Egypt was sent to France, where he saw much . fighting. Some weeks ago word was received that Arthur had been recommended for the D.C.M. for gallantly rescuing several wounded comrades whilst under heavy fire. Glowing accounts of his bravery have been received from other Manaia men who witnessed his actions on this occasion, ; and as he carried into safety no less 7 than nine men he at least saved nine homes from that sorrow which hasnow fallen on his own. All extend their heartfelt sympathy to Mr, Mrs and Miss Gilmour, and trust that when the first keen sorrow passes they will be able to look back with pride on the .» memory of their brave and noble lad,
