Corporal Thomson who was on the local staff of'the Bank of New Zealand, returned to camp this morning after a brief visit to-Hawera. The friends of Sergeant D. J; Willis will bs pleased tohear that he has secured his commission as lieutenant. Mr W. R_. Haselden was unable, through indisposition, to occupy the Bench at the Eltham Magistrate's Court yesterday. Lieut'. S. Kehrick. son of Mr Kenrich, S.M., formerly or Hawera, who has been in town for a few days, left for camp this morning. Messrs E. Dixon R. Masters, and C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., members of the Taranaki Education Board, proceeded to Wanganui to-day to go into the question of the adjustment of accounts between the Wanganui and Taranaki Boards. Mr Herbert, of Otakeho, has received word that iis secoud son, George,' has been wounded in. the thigh. He is well known in the district, and his many friends will wish him a speedy recovery.

Recent list* of casualties have iniJiuded. the names of Lance-Corporal Adam Girvan (wounded), Lance-Cor-poral Leo. Gilbert (wounded). Rifleman Jim Foreman (dangerously ill with appendicitis), who were.all members of the Hawera locomotive staff in the Railway Department. E. King, also mentioned in the lists of "wounded, resided in Hawera about fifteen years ago, when he was a most enthusiastic member of the Hawera Rifle Volunteers during the captaincy of Mr C. E. Major.

Our Eltham correspondent writes: In the list of killed in action published on Monday appeared the name of Lance-Corporal_Edwin Baxter, who enlisted from Eltnam and went with the Liverpools. His next-of-kin resides in England, and no private word of his death -w«s received here, but Mr J. Scoon, his former employer, recently had a letter from him in which his number is given and which corresponds to that published. He was popular in Eltham, took an active interest, in volunteering, and was a very good rifle shot. He was familiarly known to his acquaintances as "Tom."

Before proceeding with the business at the monthly meeting of the Hawera I Borough Council last evening, the Mayor referred to the loss sustained by Cr. A. Reid in the death of his son, Corporal A. Reid. He was sure, he said, that the councillors were sorry that Cr. Reid was not with them that evening, and he moved that the town clerk forward a letter to Cr. Reid, conveying the sympathy of the Mayor, and councillors to him and Mrs Reid in their bereavement. The motion was carried in silence. Cr. Harding also moved that a similar letter of condolence be forwarded to Mrs and Miss Turton in their, bereavement. Mr Turton had been a prominent citizen, and at one time temporarily held the position of town clerk. The resolution was also carried in silence.

In the opinion of the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce, prison labor should be used in maintaining main arterial roads.
