. * . j By the death of Mr Williajft McNiven (says the Wanganui Chronicle) the community loses another of its oldest and most highly esteemed citizens, a veteran and a pioneer in the fullest sense of the team. The deceased gentleman, who had attained th.c ripe age of 84 years, was a veteran sovdier of the Empire. He enlisted at the age of 18 and for over 12 years served with the Imperial Army as a, member of the 57tK Foot, 71st Regiment. His record of sea-vice is a long and honorable one. "'For eighteen months he was with the Colors at Corfu, for twenty months he sustained the hardships and faced the perils of the Crimean campaign, for sixteen months he was with his regiment at Malta, followed by a spell of two years and five months in East India, and finally a year and seven months in New Zealand.'He was the proud possessor of the Crimean medal and the New Zealand War medal. At the conclusion of the Maori war, Mr McNiven settled in Wanganui, where he had resided ever since. The deceased gentleman leaves a grown-up family of four, sons and one daughter, viz., Mr Wm. McNiven (Haj w.era), Mr Geo. McNiven (Western Australia), and Messrs R. G. McNiven and Martin McNiven, and Mrs S. Garner, of >Wanganui; also three step-sons, 29 grand-children, and 11 great-grand-children.
