There has been a substantial increase in the price of Australian hardwood, which is difficult to obtain even at enhanced rates. Tonnage is not plentiful, but it -is admitted that the shipping companies concerned ar-s doing their beft^ in abnormal circumstances. The cniet reason for an increase of about 20 per cent, on an average in the price of Australian timber is a marked scarcity of skilled labor. Bushmen have not been laggard in going to the war—a fact that applies equally to New Zealand axemen.
