TOLL-GATE MATTERS.

RECENT CONFERENCE RESOLU-

TIONS

A conference of delegates from the Taranaki, Stratford, Eltham and Hawera County Councils was recently held at Eltnam to discuss matters relating' to toll-gates, and at to-day's meeting of the Hawera County Council the following resolutions passed at the conference were received: (1) That "a representative of each county council represented be appointed a committee to oppose any Bill for abolition of toll-gates which may be brought before Parliament,, and *to oppose any action in that behalf interfering with councils' existing, statutory rights, and that a copy of. this resolution be forwarded to ail members of Parliament m this Dominion. (2) That each council represented be requested to appoint its representative and notify appointment to the clerk ■of the Eltham County Council (3) That after considering explanations from delegates present the scale of fees for motor cars tie left to each' individual council to fix, with a recommendation to keep same as low as conditions will allow.

The chairman (Mr Murdoch) saM that he had attended the conference. With reference to the fees for cars, the conference decided to leave the matter to the individual- councils. As far as the charges on other vehicles, etc:, were concerned the charges in Hawera County were lower than a majority, of the counties, and some .of the other county councils were considering the advisabjeness of reducing their fees. The conference desired the Council tp appoint a representative on the committee; to be set up to deal with toll-gate legislation when the occasion arose.

On the motion of Crs Tarrant and Dunlop, the chairman was appointed the- CounciPs representative. <
