GAINS IN SOUTHERN SECTORS

VIOLENT ENEMY COUNTERATTACKS DEALT WITH.

A WELL-TIMED MOVE IN ARMENIA.

LONDON^ Oct. 6. Russian communiques are always reticent regarding undecided battles, but there m-e indications that the Russians are slowly gaining the upper hand in Galicia and Vblhynia. The battle fronts of Generals Sakharoff and Tcherbacheff are now neaa-ly a hundred miles, forming th e base of a ■triangle, of which Lemberg is the apex. The latest fighting is reported from the upper reaches of the Zlota Lipa and Narajowka, but it is not clean- whether the Russians have actually forced the crossing of the Narfajowka. If so they will be at the rear of the main bridgehead defending Halicz. The Grand Duke Nicholas's move in Armenia is on a wide front, covered by the guns of the Black Sea fleet, and is timed for the moment of Turkey's resources being drained for Lemberg's defence and the capture of the Dobrudja.
