MILITARY SOCKS.
For the benefit of those who are working for the men at the front, a Hawera lady supplies the following description of the process of making the military heelless spiral sock, which was approved of by the late Lord Roberts for the use of his Indian troops. The sock possesses the advantage of fitting perfectly either the short and broad or the long and narrow foot. Things required:—Needles No. 11; quantity of wool, 60z.; length of sock, completed, 20 inches. Method: Cast on 60 stitches; knit 2 purl . 2 plain for 30 rounds. Spiral rib: Next commence the spiral rib as follows: Cross purl 1, knit 5, repeat from cross for 5 rows. In the sixth row shift every purl stitch one stitch forward; continue knitting the spiral vib as above until the sick is 18 inches long; then decrease for the toe as follows: Decrease by knitting 2 stitches together after the Ist, 3rd, sth and 7th purl st'tches in the first round, and after the 2nd, 4th, 6th and Bth purl stitches in the 3rd round, working 2nd and 4th rows in the spiral toe as before. Repeat these four rounds until there are 16 stitches left; then cast off ana draw together.
