We have been asked to; state by those nil attendance at the meeting, that Mr Conroy made, no charge to* the dairy men for the use of the Opera House on Thursday, for the meeting to consider the question of the supply of cheese for the British Army. His generosity was greatly appreciated by the meeting. At the meeting of the dairymen in the Opera House on Thursday afternoon, a director of a factory asked the Dairy Commissioner what the position was »with regard to the branding of >vney butter, ''because companies did not seem to know where they were in inie matter:" Mr Cuddie replied that i was rather surprised to 'hear this, because a departmental circular, fully explaining everything, had been sent to every ractory. It was clearly stated in the circular that all whey butter should be branded with its proper designation, namely, "whey butter."" The Maoris engaged on the Waikato river in catching the dainty and succulent little fish, Known as whitebait, have gotte on strike (the Pukekohe Times relates) "and the supply has accordingly temporarily ceased. The den .and being poor this year tlie price dropped to 4d per lb on the river, and as the natives refuse to t,ell uiidor 6d they have stopped fishing There is very little chance of the price advanciug this season, as large stocks ow canned fish were carried over from last year, and the local factory is only dealing with a small quantity. Good noney, it is claimed, can be mudeat 4d per lb, but after sceveral years of high prices the Maoris don't like to take a" io\w.r %iire, so they havty imitated the pakeha and struck work. Writing of the prespects of the angling season in South Canterbury a Christchurch correspondent states that a good fall of rain in the foothills had effected a great improvement in the Selwyn and Ashley rivers particularly. On the whole the prospects are decidedly bright. The Christchurch Society is allowing boats on Lake Lyndon this year, and anglers think this is a very wise course, as the water showed a tendency to become overstocked, and that would have been fatal from an angler's point of view, as witness Lake Rotorua, and other rainbow lakes in the North Island. There is little doubt that some of the best rainbow fishing in the Dominion will be enjoyed in the back-coun-try lakes during the coming seasons.
