THIS MORNING'S SEND-OFF.

Sergeants Townsend and Harrison and Mr E. Nalder who are going into training at the Trentham camp for n.c.o.'s, were given a hearty send-off at the railway station this morning. The Mayor (Mr E. Dixon) congratulated the men on the fine spirit they had shown in offering their services for their country. He made a stirring appeal to those single men who had not yet gone, and who could go, to enlist. There were many young unmarried men who could" answer the call of the Empire if they cared to, and in some of these cases their positions could be filled by capable women. This was a point which he commended to the consideration of all concerned. He said it was well to remember what Lord Kitchener said in his great speech on July 9, that Great Britain had under arms- 67,000 per million; New Zealand had 26,000. Money was necessary for a successful war," but Lord Kitchener said he wanted men, material, money. On behalf of the people of Hawera and district he thanked the men for the sacrifice made for the country, and wished them good health arid distinction in service. "May," he added, "the news of the downfall of Constantinople be heard before you leave these shores." Hawera, he said, was proud of those who had gone from her and of her heroes who had fallen at the Dardanelles. The Mayoress presented each recruit with a parcel containing "something useful" for camp life. Cheers were given for the men, the King, and the boys at the front, and as the train left the station there were further enthusiastic cheers.
