T}i e st}^ ie Persons Act Amendment Bill (Mr A. Harris), which has been read a first time in the House of .Representatives, but not exolained is a measure which should have"a beneficial effect if it comes into force (says the Evening Post). Under the present Act. if a wife obtains a maintenance order against her husband and he fails to make contributions towards her support, no action can be taken unle** instigated by the wife. Mr Harris' BPI provides that an officer of th« Magistrate's Court be appointed, whose duty it shall be to receive all moneys paid into that Court pursuant to the provisions of any maintenance order made and if any person liable to i>ay any moneys into Court fails for on c month to do so proceedings for the recovery of the money shall be taken by the officer mentioned. The Bill will afford protection for wives who are unable to take action against their husbands, and it is considered likely that it will' pass wmragh its various stages to the Statue
