AUSTRALIAN CORRESPONDENT'S DESPATCH.
HOW OUR BOYS BEHAVED UNDER FIRE.
GERMAN SUBMARINE HIDING PLACE DISCOVERED.
CRITICISM OF AUSTRALIAN CENSORSHIP.
"(Received May 28, 2 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 28. Captain Bean, cabling on the 23rd, says: After three days' attack by the allied infantry on the Turkish positions, the Australian Brigade received orders to be in the fighting column in line with the New Zealand Brigade. Four hundred yards ahead lay the British firing trench, the most advanced position, but unconnected by communication trenches. It was the only scrap of cover for 1200 yards, and the moment the leading companies appeared they were met by a steady fire. The operations were carried out as calmly as if in Egypt. A perfect hail of shrapnel followed, out of which came the infantry as if nothing was happening. They reached the British trench, where they took a breather, and then advanced across the open ground, the men dropping fast, for a further 500 yards, * where they dug themselves in and held the position. The captain of the steamer Physa, which has arrived at Newcastle from Singapore, states that the newspapers there contained accounts of the sinking of German submarines at the Scilly Islands in March. In a cave on the islands the Germans had a base large enough to accommodate six submarines. Supplies were sunk in tbe airtight yesI sei at a depth of several fathoms. The 1 spot was discovered by British officers, who waited and bombed the incoming submarines, seven of which were destroyed. MELBOURNE. May 28. In the House, Mr Sampson asked wbat attitude the censors were taking towards speeches of members. Mr Cook said the censorship was unsatisfactory, restrictive, awkward, and irksome. It seemed as if a Minister, through tbe censor, could pave himself criticism. .Anything more ludicrous than the. censorship in Australia was impos- i sible. . Mr Tensen replied t-Tiat there was no cens'M-ino- criticism unless it co^tiined anything not good for the public to know.
A "pnd-off was given this morning to +-be Eltham men going to Trentham. The report of the pioceedings arrived ttio late for to-day's issue. * Messrs Smith and Easton gave a large box of apples to the contingent which left for Trentham to-day. The men heartily appreciated the gift.
