THE FIREMAN'S BREATH OF LIFE.
A SPLENDID INVENTION
The London Fire Brigade has added to its appliances a wonderful life-sav-ing invention, which enables its men 6afely to penetrate into burning premises charged with smoke, dangerous gases, and poisonous fumes from chemicals.
The new apparatus permits tour men to livo and work for. an hour in the worst possible atmosphere, for they work with ther heads enclosed in appliances to wbich oure air is either pumped or generated from reserve stores of oxygen and caustic soda. In addition to this, the new apparatus includes a high-pressure air-fan, driving 400 cubic feet of pure air a minute into a burning basement. And, in order that the darkness may be lightened, they carry on their engine two searchlights, each of 3000 candle-power, with reels of 100 yards of cable to each, "and two cluster lamps of 300 candle-power. _ This magnificent new nlant, the finest life-saving scheme for firemen vet devised, is carried on a motor vehicle. So far only one has been installed, but it is to be hoped that in course of time every important fire station will have one.
